These are the exact words God told Job when He stormed into the conversation they were having: “Who is this that obscures my plans with words without knowledge?” (Job 38:2) Clearly Job was speaking words without knowledge. God then asks him to defend himself for He shall question him. This was the beginning of a whole lot of questions that God asked Job regarding his ability to do what He does in maintaining creation.

In the passages that follow, we are shown all the wondrous works of God done in perfect wisdom and majesty. Chapter 38 reveals His excellence and splendor as the God of the universe. It shows the heart of God toward His creation and reveals the depth of his concern for all that he has created. We get to know a great deal about God’s activities on earth in maintaining perfect harmony in the universe and ensuring that everything is done in a very systematic and organized fashion. Let us list some interesting facets of God’s creation:

  • He laid the earth’s foundation, marked off its dimensions and stretched a measuring line across it. He shut up the sea behind doors before it burst forth from the womb of the earth. He made clouds as the sea’s garment and wrapped it in thick darkness. He fixed limits for it and set its doors and bars in place. He journeys to the springs of the sea and walks in the recesses of the deep.
  • He knows the way to the abode of light and the place where darkness resides. He gives orders to the morning, and shows the dawn its place. He knows the way to the storehouses of the snow and the storehouses of the hail. He knows the way to the place where the lightning is dispersed, and the place where the east winds are scattered over the earth.
  • He watches when the doe bears her fawn, when the mountain goats give birth as He counts the months till they bear. He gives the horse its strength and clothes its neck with a flowing mane. He makes it leap like a locust, striking terror with its proud snorting. It paws fiercely, rejoicing in its strength, and charges into the fray. It laughs at fear, afraid of nothing; it does not shy away from the sword. The quiver rattles against its side, along with the flashing spear and lance. In frenzied excitement it eats up the ground; it cannot stand still when the trumpet sounds. At the blast of the trumpet it snorts, ‘Aha!’ It catches the scent of battle from afar, the shout of commanders and the battle cry.
  • He brings forth the constellations in their seasons and leads out the Bear with its cubs. He has the wisdom to count the clouds. He can tip over the water jars of the heavens when the dust becomes hard and the clods of earth stick together. He knows the laws of the heavens and can set up God’s dominion over the earth.

It is obvious from all the points listed above that God does amazing and miraculous acts everyday and most of the time we are not even aware of them. Job was too caught up in his own situation and was so obsessed with the problem that he had that he failed to understand that God was greater than all his troubles put together and He had perfect control over his situation. He was using his plans to bring forth the next best version of Job. He was dealing with Job’s insecurities and the rumblings and the tumblings in his heart so that God could use him in his new avatar to do greater good than he had been doing before.

How often do we as Job complain about the little trouble that we have in our lives? God is reminding us that He is much greater than anything we could ever go through and he has been through the worst in his human condition. In everything that he wants us to be trained in, he has already been trained and has set a very good example for us. We must not consider his example lightly. He is the commander-in-chief. We are the soldiers in God’s battalion that must be equipped for war. We have a real enemy in Satan. Until the final war is won, we must stay on guard against everything that the devil has intended to use against us and to take us out of the war field. The war field is where the harvest of God is being gathered. This is where we must contend to win the war. We cannot let the devil thwart us out of the harvest fields because the fields are ripe and the workers are few.

God has sent us into the fields to harvest souls so that the kingdom of God will be full of godly souls that have been made ready to dwell with God forever. This is His plan to set up God’s dominion over the earth. Amen.
