The Miracle at the Wedding of Cana (John 2:1-11)

Jesus did His first miracle of changing water into wine to manifest His glory so that His disciples believed in him. (John 2:11) The wedding took place on the third day and Jesus and his mother as well as his disciples were present. The wine ran out and Mary, Jesus’ mother, said to Jesus, “They have no more wine.”

Jesus refused to be involved with it saying, “My hour has not yet come.” Mary said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” They took six stone water jars, used for ceremonial washing, filled it with water to the brim and drew some out to take to the master of the banquet. When the master of the banquet tasted the wine, he called the bridegroom aside and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.”

Jesus’ purpose in dying for us was to give us the new wine, the costly wine, that has been reserved for the last days. His time had not yet come indicates Jesus had not yet been crucified. He could only offer the best (and costliest) wine after His death. So He refused to be involved out of His time.

– Holy Spirit

Mary knew that the infilling of all people with the new wine had to be the first miracle—so she presses into it. The Lord gets the message and asks the servants (the workers of the Kingdom) to fill six stone jars. Six denotes ‘man’ and stone jars (empty) indicate ‘stony hearts devoid of the Spirit’. Jesus asks for them to be filled with the water of the Word. When the servants drew the water out indicates that the water had remained long enough to start working on their hearts. Their stony hearts were replaced by hearts of flesh as the people waited and walked long enough in the Word. The Word had become so fermented in their hearts now made into flesh that the contents that came out were filled with the Holy Spirit.

Acts 2:17: In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people; your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.

The miraculous power of God to manifest His glory in the last days would greatly exceed what was done before Jesus’ sacrifice. The best wine has been reserved for the end and we who are called to administer the wine are being called to make the Kingdom attractive to all so that they will be drawn in large numbers and seek to partake of the Kingdom. This is the wedding feast of the Lamb when all shall partake of the feast of God’s Word and have an abundance of His Spirit. They shall belong to the everlasting kingdom forever and ever! Amen.
